Stud wall calculator
How many lengths of timber do you buy for a stud wall? Enter the run, height and centres — the studs, noggings and plates come out as lengths to order, packed into whole sticks the way timber is actually bought. Nothing is saved or sent anywhere.
What this does and doesn’t do
The stud count is for a plain run. Openings, corners, T-junctions, jack studs, headers and double top plates are not added or deducted — a door or a return means adjusting the count by hand. There is no allowance for kerf (saw-cut waste), no end-squaring, and no offcut reuse between members: studs, noggings and plates are each packed from their own stock, never sharing a leftover, even where the section is identical.
The quantities are not cut-optimised, and framing wastage defaults to zero — the offcut left on each stick is already the breakage allowance, so a percentage on top would allow for the same thing twice. Add one if you want a deliberate buffer, knowing each point rounds up to a whole extra member.
The wall area is gross — length × height, with no openings taken out. That is deliberate: it is the number you start from for boards and finishes, before you knock off doors and windows yourself.
It is an accurate estimate to verify on site, not a guaranteed cutting list. It gives you the numbers and the working behind them; the final call is yours.
